Three Things I'm Thankful For...
Nov 21, 2018If I had to choose just three things in the yoga realm that I am grateful for this year, these would be the ones!
I really don’t know how to describe in words how I felt when Tim got sick back in June. I wasn't expecting it – I don't know if anyone really was. Of course I never want to see anyone suffer, but knowing that Tim was suffering was unbearably hard. Friends and family would call during that time to chit-chat and ask me how he was doing. Which was always followed by, How is everything else going? But for me, it didn't feel like there was anything else here. It's practice, family, work, community… what else was there?
Of course this was impermanent, like everything is. But I do feel incredibly grateful to have him back. I know I'm not the only one in the shala who experienced the auspicious disappearance of nagging body aches and injuries on Tim's return.
The truth is, I'm grateful for all my teachers. We as a community are lucky to have such knowledgeable teachers who are also so accessible, people who point out what's interesting and strike awe in us as students so that we are motivated to learn more.
One thing that this past year has shown me is that it's good to be discerning. We live in a society where judgment has a negative connotation, but good judgment is fundamental to discriminating awareness, which is a vital skill. Obviously, we want to avoid prejudicial judgment, but indeed we do want to have the clarity of mind so that we can make accurate judgements without making it personal.
Healthy judgments based on observations without bias let us make decisions in our actions and our influences that give us the space we need to grow and transform. Developing clarity of mind let's us navigate through the murky areas and weed out what isn't serving us so that we can make more space for what is.
Cultivating the analytical insight to make transformation happen in your life is empowering. You get to be selective. And selectivity is badass.
I wouldn't be able to do what I love without all the support from friends, students, and practitioners like you. Whether you've known me for many years or you've only just joined this sangha, I am grateful for your support, feedback, and for your sharing my work with others.
Thank you to all of you, who are all my friends, peers, colleagues, and sangha, and who keep me honest and help me to navigate through this wild ride of yoga. Thank you to my students, who inspire me to become a better communicator, educator, and supporter. Thank you to the people who inspire me to practice when I don't want to and encourage me to do things I don't think I can. Thank you to my friends who edit my blogs and watch my dog so I can teach and reach more people. For all of you, I am grateful.
