The 3 Ds
Mar 01, 2022I recently heard from a student who practiced with me a long time ago. Like so many people I've heard from over the years, he stopped practicing.
Most of us know how this goes. Whether it’s for a practice, a week, or a few years, there are times when we take little detours off the path of yoga.
This student wrote to me telling me he was looking for a path back into yoga.
No one but you can find your path back into yoga. It’s not the responsibility of a teacher, a community, or a studio. Yes, all these things can make finding your path much easier, but ultimately it’s up to you. The time you spend away from yoga doesn’t matter. What counts is your return to it.
The most common mistake I see students make when forging a path to yoga is that they wait until they are motivated to start. But in reality, motivation usually comes after you start. You don’t need to feel good to get going; you need to get going to start feeling good. This is true on all levels - the first sun salutation never feels good. The tenth almost always does.
When you’re struggling with starting, restarting or sustaining a yoga practice think of the 3 D’s.
Make the decision that you are going to start a yoga practice or that you are going to have a long term practice. Own your decision and eliminate your excuses.
DISCIPLINE
Be disciplined. Take action on what you decided to do. Set small goals, remind yourself of your goals, and hold yourself accountable. It takes discipline to have a yoga practice.
DO IT
Get on your mat and do it, even if it’s just for 10 minutes a day. Those 10 minutes will add up and over the course of a few months you will have spent hours practicing. You can do it!
